About the University

Known for its excellence in education and research, the University of Waikato is placed 375 out of the world’s best 1,000 universities by the QS World University Rankings 2021. The university offers numerous study options across its eleven faculties and schools and has recently introduced a range of online programmes which students can start while they are based outside of New Zealand. Students who start online in 2021 are eligible for a 20% bursary.

Home to international students from around the globe, Waikato offers cutting-edge facilities, including the Student Centre, Cyber Security Lab and Sports Science Lab. In addition, the university has seven research institutes dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research in environmental science, business and leadership as well as professional learning and development. The university’s new purpose-built Tauranga campus was opened in March of 2019.

The university takes great pride in its partnerships with numerous universities around the world, which means students benefit from a high-quality, industry-aligned education. There are also over 2000 student placements across various industries every year as well as visits from employers and alumni with graduate positions and internship opportunities.

The International Student Services Office at Waikato offers core facilities that can help with a range of issues including academic support, career support as well as health and wellbeing. Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) represents students’ collective voice on-campus. With over 60 student clubs to choose from, students can take part in several activities and social events alongside their studies and get an opportunity to mix with people from diverse backgrounds.

Located in New Zealand, the university is a home away from home. The main campus is based in Hamilton, the fourth-largest city in New Zealand with a small-city atmosphere. New Zealand was ranked the 2nd most peaceful country in the world (2019 Global Peace Index) and has a low crime rate. More than 90 per cent of students are highly satisfied with the Waikato student experience.
